  • Your wedding dress photos on a hanger
  • Everything You Need For Flat Lay Photos
  • How to incorporate your details into your wedding photography timeline
  • The venue and reception details
  • Late Night Flat Lays

The details on your wedding day are the thoughtful little things that you have spent weeks, months, or years planning for your best day ever. Some of them will live on forever, like your rings, others will be unknown to future generations, like your fragrance bottle… they will only be preserved in photos.

Your Wedding Dress On A Hanger

Your wedding dress is very likely the most expensive article of clothing you will ever purchase. It deserves to be photographed beautifully.

Please, I beg you… don’t have it photographed on the plastic hanger it came with. A basic plastic or wire hanger can cheapen the look and distract from the gown’s intricate details, lace, beading, or silhouette.

If you don’t want separate hanging photos, that’s perfectly fine! Your dress will be featured prominently in every portrait once you’re wearing it, captured from multiple angles as you move.

Pro tip: Steam the dress before hair and make-up and remove any tags or plastic coverings, that way it’s ready for me when I get there (and the steam won’t ruin your hair and makeup.) This small step makes a big difference in your final images and the timeline.

Everything You Need For Flat Lay Photos

Flat lay photography is one of the most popular and versatile ways to document your wedding details. These overhead, styled compositions create clean, artistic images that highlight textures, colors, and personal touches.

If you decide to include flat lays, (highly recommended!) here is a complete checklist of items to have ready when I arrive. Prepare them in a dedicated box or bag to save time.

For the Bride:

  • The rings (engagement ring + wedding bands, cleaned and polished!)
  • Your full invitation suite (include multiple cards if there is printing on two sides, envelopes, RSVP cards, and any wax seals or calligraphy)
  • Your bouquets and extra blooms (ask your florist ahead of time for loose flowers or backup stems for styling)
  • Jewelry you’ll be wearing (earrings, necklace, bracelets, heirlooms)
  • Shoes
  • Fragrance bottle
  • Veil or hairpiece
  • Any other sentimental items (something old, new, borrowed, blue; vow books; letters from your partner)

For the Groom:

  • Tie or bow tie
  • Shoes
  • Socks (preferably unworn, in coordinating colors)
  • Boutonnière
  • Cologne
  • Cuff links
  • Watch
  • Pocket square or other accessories

Additional ideas that elevate flat lays:

  • Vow books or handwritten notes
  • Custom signage or welcome gifts
  • Favors or ceremony programs

Things I will bring to style your flat lay on your wedding day:

  • Styling mat
  • Ring boxes
  • Ribbon
  • lighting

How To Incorporate Your Details Into Your Weding Day Timeline

Timing is everything on a wedding day. If you want beautiful flat lays of your details and photos of your dress hanging, plan to allow at least 30 minutes in your timeline at the start of the day.

This buffer gives us time to style and shoot without rushing. Ring shots alone can be captured fairly quickly but full flat lays with multiple items need more breathing room.

Best Practices for Your Timeline:

Schedule detail shots early, right after your photographer arrives during getting ready.

Communicate with your coordinator, florist, and bridal party about when items need to be available.

If you’re short on time, prioritize: rings, invitation suite, dress, bouquets, and shoes are the must-haves for most couples.

The Venue and Reception Details

Your ceremony and reception spaces deserve documentation too! The empty, beautifully set rooms tell the story of the atmosphere you created.

If you want clean, guest-free venue photos:

  • Schedule time in your timeline for these shots before guests arrive.
  • The ideal moment for reception details is right at the end of cocktail hour, just before guests are invited into the space. This allows for pristine table settings, candles lit, centerpieces, place cards, and lighting without disruption.
  • Coordinate with your wedding planner or venue coordinator. Let them know you’d like a brief “reveal” moment so you and your partner can see the room first, take it in, and we will document your reaction.

If your timeline is tight, we can attempt to capture some venue details during transitions (e.g., while guests are at cocktail hour), but planning ahead yields the best results.

Late Night Flat Lays

At the end of the night the details are the evidence of your celebration. Cake half eaten, polaroids we captured throughout the day, your glass of champagne. This is a perfect image to end your wedding gallery and one we love to style and capture for you.

Final Thoughts

Perfect detail photos don’t happen by accident, they come from thoughtful preparation and a little extra time built into your wedding day. The investment pays off in images that capture the small details of your planning and the beauty of your choices.

Whether it’s the delicate lace on your dress, the sparkle of your rings against handwritten vows, or the dreamy setup at your reception, these photos preserve the feeling of the day long after the flowers fade.

Reach out to discuss how we can capture all of your meaningful details. We love helping couples create deeply personal galleries filled with emotion, personality, and the little things that made their day perfect.

Start gathering your items today and enjoy the process. Your future self (and your photo album) will thank you!
